5 Common Disorders of the Circulatory System

The circulatory system, also known as the cardiovascular system comprises of the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries. This system is one of the most crucial organ systems of our body and is responsible for carrying nutrients and oxygen to all parts of our body.

According to the medical researches, the cause for the highest mortality rate is diseases and disorders of the circulatory system. Five common disorders of the circulatory system are discussed below.

Atherosclerosis: It is a form of artery disease and is caused when fatty deposits known as “plaque” accumulate on the inner arterial walls. Over time the arterial walls harden and their elasticity is lost. Primarily artherosclerosis affects the arteries and its complication includes heart attack and cardiovascular disease. Two major risks for developing artherosclerosis are smoking and high blood pressure.

Hypertension: Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension is a common circulatory system disorder which is often associated with arteriosclerosis. In this health condition the blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) reading is higher than the normal reading. It is called the “silent killer” because it does not show any symptom and remains undiagnosed for many years. Our heart has to work harder because of hypertension; this may often lead to complications such as kidney failure, heart attack, or stroke. Hypertension can be treated through medications, diet, and exercise and stress management.

Peripheral Vascular Disease: It is disease of the circulatory system and affects circulation of blood to the extremities or tissues of the body, including the legs and the arms. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is the most common form of peripheral vascular disease. PAD begins when “plaque” accumulates on the inner walls of the arteries. If it is not detected and treated then it may lead to artherosclerosis. Its symptoms include tingling, numbness and other complications.

Coronary Artery Disease: Also known as coronary heart disease, it is the most common type of heart disease and is the leading cause of death all over the world. It is a condition in which plaque accumulates in the coronary arterial walls; thus blood supply to the heart is impaired. It can be effectively prevented by medications, lifestyle changes and medical procedures.

Deep Vein Thrombosis: It is a condition in which thrombus or a blood clot develops in one of your deep veins usually in leg. It can cause swelling and pain and can lead to pulmonary embolism.
