Acupuncture FAQs

Acupuncture is a very simple Chinese technique by which trained technicians or doctors poke long needles into sensitive pressure points in the body. This technique is well known now all over the world and is highly reputed for its control on chronic disease. Here are a few simple FAQs on the disease and how it can control diseases like arthritis, high blood pressure and body aches.

What is acupuncture good for?
Acupuncture is very good for chronic conditions where the body is affected by slowly progressive health conditions. The WHO has also allowed the use of acupuncture for the following chronic medical conditions.
•    Acute muscle pains and joint aches like osteoarthritis
•    Post myocardial infractions and paralysis
•    Constipation and diarrhea
•    Impotence
•    Backache and headaches

What happens during the treatment?
The exact process of treatment is very simple and lasts for about 3o minutes. Doctors or practioners will take a detailed medical history so that they can plan your acupuncture treatment protocol. Once they have your medical history, four to twelve medical pressure points are selected and then pre sterilized needles are inserted into the points. Most patients state that they feel warmth or a tingling sensation around the exact location of the needles. But most of the time, the process is completely painless. The needles are left in for 20 minutes and then gently extracted. You can also carry your own needle set to the practioners.

Does acupuncture hurt?
No it does not. Patients do experience tingling and burning at the site of the pins or a few may experience the sensation of an ant bite. But very few people feel real pain.

How often must the process be repeated and how long will it be?
The treatment routing usually depends on the doctor and your medical history. But a usual process is a course of 10 daily treatments followed by a break of a week. Then you are called back again for the same 10 day treatment. A few doctors may also stagger the treatments to about three a week and then call you back the next week. But the exact treatment time will be extended. The exact treatment time will depend on the disease and how you feel with the treatment. Chronic disease will usually take a longer time to treat.
