ADHD Causes
It could be a real bad news for the parents when their children are diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). ADHD children lack concentration in class, forget things easily, become violent and aggressive without any reason, and can go into depression if not taken proper care of. Some children are diagnosed with ADHD before the age of seven whereas some children are seen with this defect in infancy.
Some of the possible causes of ADHD in children are stated below.
Heredity could be one of the major causes of ADHD in children, because this disorder runs in family. Smoking is one of the leading causes of ADHD in children. Women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to give birth to a child with brain disorders like ADHD. Women consuming alcohol during pregnancy are also at a higher risk of delivering babies with birth defects, which also includes ADHD.
If you are exposed to toxins during your pregnancy period you are likely to have a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Environmental poisons like PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) also affect the fetus and cause mental disorder.
Some children are born with anatomy defects. Through brain scans it has been found in some cases that children affected with ADHD had differences in brain structure. Less activity was found in the part of the brain which controlled their attention and activities.
Even if the expectant mother avoided smoking and alcohol during pregnancy, but if the infant got exposed to the environmental toxins, he/she is likely to develop Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Children who remain in contact with lead, paints, insecticides, pesticides etc are at greater risk to develop ADHD.
If you find that your child is affected with ADD or ADHD, you should tackle your child wisely. Do not be rude when he doesn’t finish any work. Don’t pressurize him to do home works or any other kind of mental work which he doesn’t want to do. He may get annoyed and violent if you force him to do anything. Always be nice to your child.
If you are pregnant, avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol. Also, avoid cosmetic products which contain mercury. Some fishes contain high amounts of mercury. You should avoid these to prevent your unborn baby from becoming the victim of ADHD.
Consult a psychiatrist or counselors for the treatment of your child with ADHD.
