Are Breast Implants Safe?
The number of women getting breast implants is getting higher every year. There are a number of short term and long term risks that any woman who is planning to get her boobs done should be aware of. Studies show that within the first three years of re-construction three out of four patients had at least one local complication such as—pain, infection, hardening or the need for additional surgery. It was less in augmentation patients but still it was substantial.
The implants do not last for ever and once you replace them the risk of complication rises higher. But in case you remove them your breasts will not return to its original shape, either they will wrinkle or sag.
It is very difficult to predict for how long an implant will last. Think of it like a car, problems can happen anytime but chances are more as it gets older. Implants are made of silicon envelope filled with gel or saline water. It can develop a tear or hole and leak there contents. This is called rupture. Women with leaking implants were found reporting at least one of the debilitating diseases. When silicon implant ruptures the gel may migrate outside the chest causing lumps called—Granulomas.
A rheumatologic symptom such as joint pains worsens in women with implants. While there are conflicting views about connection between breast implants and breast cancer but they can interfere with mammogram screenings. Implants can always block out the appearance of cancer cells. Breast feeding also becomes impossible if the implants were placed through an incision around the nipple as this effects the milk ducts but if the implants were through small incisions under the breast or in the under arm area, It will not interfere with the ability to breast feed.
When a woman decides to have implants, she must consider how that decision will affect her. Weigh the risks and benefits of breast implantation and carefully take a decision.
