Are you Addicted to Sugar?
When a person craves for sweet foods and finds it very difficult to control the intake, then he might be addicted to sugar. If you find yourself eating chocolates, cookies and cakes all the time then you do have a problem. In fact, if large part of your diet includes sweet foods and if denied you start getting headaches, tremors, lack of concentration, irritability, just like another drugs then this shows that you are addicted to it.
Researchers feel that coming out of a sugar addiction is difficult than quitting smoking or drinking. Sugar is present in all foods, even foods that we feel are healthy like fruits, grains, dairy products etc, but here we are talking about refined sugar. Our body digests and get benefited by natural sugar because it is not in high quantities plus it is added with other nutrients. However, refined sugar is a pleasured drug with zero nutritious value. Take a spoon full of sugar or a piece of sweet chocolate, put it on your tongue and observe the effects. It will give you a lot of satisfaction and high.
Because the damages are slow to see and it is universally consumed gives it legalization. This is another reason why it is all the more difficult to quit. You don’t have the pressure of the society.
Once you realize the benefits you will be getting from coming out of the habit it won’t be difficult overcoming the sugar addiction. There is no need to deprive yourself, as this will lead to deep craving. You need to change your habits gradually by eliminating things that contain only sugar and no healthy benefits. Switch to fruit sweetened treats instead of refined sugar.
Avoid products which have corn syrup, fructose, sucrose and dextrose. They are nothing else but sugar. Try to eat home made fruits as much as possible. Just one can of non diet soda have ten tea spoons of sugar. Keep your blood sugar levels under control by eating at regular intervals. This will keep you satisfied and less craving for sugar.
