Nothing can replace the power of communication in a marriage. A strong understanding is the foundation of a nurturing relationship. If the couple understands each other before the marriage, chances are that their marriage will be successful and loving.

Each individual is different than the other and if you have to spend your life with someone, it is always better that the relationship begins on a note of honesty and understanding. Discuss each and every aspect of your life – your dreams, aspirations and desires.

Test your partner on many parameters and go ahead with your decision only if you feel that the two of you are compatible on every level, especially those levels that you consider most important. Separate the considerations that are primary and hence most important from the ones that are secondary.

Make sure that both of you agree on your future plans. If there is any kind of discrepancy in the thought processes between the two of you, it can result in a lot of friction. For example, if your spouse plans to pursue an international career and settle in another country and you want to pursue further studies in your own country, what do you do?

Make sure that your partner is ready to meet you halfway in your decisions about your life. When you are in a close relationship with someone, your decisions affect the other person’s life too. Understanding before marriage should involve many joint decisions. Discuss thoroughly your weaknesses and strengths. Discuss your expectations from each other.

While communicating with your partner is a great thing, you may need to individually clear your perceptions about marriage too. Commitment requires a lot of hard work, patience and sacrifice. A husband and a wife especially need to have realistic expectations. Since they will start a family in time, the couple should be ready to face any barriers and tumbling blocks. Household chores and issues in childcare should also be discussed.

The husband and wife should be able to grow together and be able to have a close relationship that fulfills each of them.
