Taking care of someone is a tedious task. It is stressful both mentally as well as physically. You go through a range of emotions which taking care of someone old or sick. You not only need to know what to do but you also need to know what not to do.
You need to take care of yourself if you want to care for another person effectively. It can be overwhelming, especially if you have small kids or job etc. You will feel angry and frustrated at times but don’t feel guilty and accept your emotions as they come and not as right or wrong. You need to recognize stress and take steps to manage it. Try to maintain a positive attitude as much as you can.
There is a saying ‘unity is strength’. Don’t hesitate in asking for help from others. Getting small errands done or asking someone else to prepare a meal once in a while will help you a lot. Take as much help as you can from your family, friends, community or public resources that offer assistance. There are a lot of programs that offer support. There are many people in same situations and talking to them can help relieve the pressure you may feel.
Be informed about the problem of the person you are taking care. Try to know about the latest techniques that can help the patient and make life easier.
Re organize the home to make commonly things more accessible. Encourage the patient to be independent as much as possible; this will make them feel better about themselves. Be loving and kind towards a patient, understand their feelings and respect their decision. The purpose of giving care is defeated if you force them to do things your way. Studies show that the happiness of being loved can speed up the recover of the patient.
