Benefits of Tai Chi
In today’s stressful environments, people search for simple ways to relax and improve general health. One of the best methods applicable to all ages is the practice of Tai Chi. This form of ancient martial art originated in China.
It involves the gentle, free flowing movement of all parts of the body in harmony. The weight and shift in balance leads to strengthening of ankles, knees, hips, legs and overall body posture; while also making them more flexible and less susceptible to injury. It also helps mentally by increasing concentration, focus and de-stressing the mind. Some of the main benefits of tai chi are:
• Improving body posture – the simple method of not using external weights and only the weight of your body, helps in developing a correct posture and alignment of the spine. A right body posture ultimately releases stress from the back and makes the digestive system better.
• Strengthening joints – the shift in movement that change the weight on different joints, helps in increasing nutrients to the joint and in boosting natural lubrication.
• Increasing flexibility and strengthens muscles – the flowing motion of joints and other body parts increases their flexibility, while at the same time strengthens the muscles that support these movements.
• Defense mechanism – if tai chi is practiced regularly, there will lesser chances of stiffness in joints and body movements. This will help as preventive defense mechanism for pain when people develop ailments such as arthritis, lumbago and sciatica.
• Mental benefits – the slow, graceful technique of observing movements and deep breathing helps in making the min more clear, focused and relaxed. It is a great method to reduce stress and improve concentration.
• Other benefits – apart from the above mentioned benefits, tai chi also helps in improving better breathing, functioning of internal organs and quality of sleep; reducing high blood pressure, back pain, anxiety or depression; and decelerating bone loss for women post menopause.
In order to use tai chi as self defense, one has to understand how to use and focus on internal energies. Learning to identify these energies in the first place takes a lot of practice and dedication. Applying them is the next step that happens much later. Therefore, tai chi as a form of martial art, self defense technique is difficult to attain; but not impossible.
There are many methods to achieve similar results. No equipment is required to perform tai chi. It can be practiced anywhere at any time as per convenience. The simple, slow moving technique of tai chi is easy to practice and if taken seriously has intense benefits for the body, mind and overall health.
