Turmeric is a plant found in south India and Indonesia. It is used in almost every Indian dish. It not only provides color but also is full of health benefits.
It has properties to purify the blood and help in blood circulation. It also helps in lowering the cholesterol levels, preventing the formation of plaque in the artery walls and also strengthening the blood vessels and in the process prevents many heart problems.
Studies show that if taken regularly, it decreases cancer. If combined with some veggies like broccoli, turnip, cabbage ensures protection against prostrate cancer. People who use turmeric regularly are less prone to colon cancer. It stops the growth of new blood vessels in the tumor.
In India turmeric is used from the past 25 years and is thought to be nature’s most powerful healer. Due to its anti- inflammatory properties it is very beneficial in arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, without the side effects.
It has been seen that turmeric has an ability to heal wounds and helps in treating the damaged skin. In India it is used as a body scrub by mixing it in flour and oil or fresh cream. Massage your body with this paste for about 30 minutes and then take a bath. It makes the skin soft and supple. If you have oily skin then instead of cream use curd. You can also apply turmeric powder mixed with sugarcane juice to prevent wrinkles.
As the people are getting aware of the versatility and power of this herb, more and more research is being undertaken to develop a drug out of it. Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. The pills are available at any health food stores. People with gall stones or bile obstructions or pregnant women should consult a doctor before using it.
