Blood Clots Treatment

Blood clotting is common problem in people who lead an inactive life, who eat excess fat foods and who do sedentary jobs. When there is blood clot in the veins, the blood supply to other parts of your body is stopped or obstructed partially which can cause you a lot of health problems. Swelling, redness, fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath etc are some symptoms of blood clots. Blood clots should be treated timely otherwise it could prove to be fatal. Given below are some blood clots treatments.Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): This type of clot occurs in deep veins of the leg (not in both the legs). It causes the affected leg to swell abnormally. To treat DVT, blood thinners (anticoagulants) such as Heparin and Warfarin are used. Heparin is very effective and acts immediately after its injection is given by experts. Within minutes patient suffering from coagulation gets relief after receiving Heparin. However Warfarin takes 5-7 days to take effect and it is usually given together with Heparin and when it becomes fully active, Heparin is stopped and patient is discharged from the hospital. However, these medicines should be given by doctors only.

Low Molecular Weight Heparins are also given to patients facing blood clotting problems. This drug is fairly new and can be used easily and is also cheaper than Heparins.

DVT or any other blood clots often go undiagnosed. Hence various types of tests are done to check blood clots if they are suspected.

Blood Test (D-dimer): This test is done when blood clots are suspected. If you get negative result, you can be sure that you are not affected with blood clotting. Even positive result may not be the reason of blood clots. Positive result can be due to other disease also.

Ultrasound scan is also performed to find out blood clots behind the knees or thighs. Doppler ultrasound is performed to know the speed of blood in your veins. If it is still doubtful, x-ray dye test (venogram), MRI or ventilation scan may be done.

Apart from blood clot treatments, some prevention is also necessary. When you travel confined in car or plane, find ways to move your legs and ankles. Sitting at one place for hours will increase the risk of blood clotting in your legs. Don’t wear tight clothes and keep drinking water or any other liquid to avoid dehydration.
