Bone Tumors
Bone tumors are nothing in fact atypical growth of cells that happens in side the bone. These tumors can be benign or malevolent. The causes of such tumors still remain unexplored. But studies suggest that the possibilities of such tumors can be due to trauma, mutations and even radiations. The worst thing is they occur at places were growth takes place rapidly. Some of the tumors may vanish in due course of time and may not require treatment. The incidence of bone cancer increases with the families showing any such cases of cancer.
Benign tumors may not require treatments but they have to be assessed periodically to monitor its progress or regression. In most of the cases the surgical removal; becomes mandatory. And they need to be treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or both in combination.
Some types of tumors that happen in bones:-
Chondroblastoma- this type of tumor is rare in nature but can happen to people of any age group. This cancer is usually found in the epiphyses in long bones. They account approximately for 5% of benign tumors and are noticed in minor centers of ossification. Tumors are more found in the humerus. This kind of tumors can be found with connection of bone cysts. The males are more vulnerable to this kind of bone tumor.
Enchondroma- this is a kind of non-cancerous bone tumor. This initiates from the cartilages. A cartilage is the connective tissue that is present in the adults. This is from where most of the bones develop. Thus we can say that the role of cartilage is very important in the entire growth process. Our body constitutes of different types of cartilages of the body. Enchondroma usually affects the cartilage that lines in the inner side of the bones.
Osteochondroma- it is overgrowth of the cartilage and bone near the plate. It is also known as osteocartilaginous exostoses. Such growth can happen anywhere where the cartilage of the bone is formed. It mostly affects the pelvis, the scapula and the long leg bones. It may also develop in children.
Giant cell tumor- it is made up of group of benign cells that can lump up in form of aggressive tumor near a bone joint. In most of the case this is near the knee but can also happen in the bones of arms and legs. It can lead to pain and can restrict the movement and may be cancerous.
