Breast Changes During Pregnancy

A woman’s body goes through many extraordinary changes during pregnancy. Of all these changes women are often most intrigued by the changes that occur in their breasts while they are pregnant. These changes include:

Breast tenderness:
Hormonal changes during pregnancy cause increased blood flow and modification in the breast tissue which make your breast feel swollen, sore, itchy and unusually sensitive to touch. Some women describe the sensation as an exaggerated version of how their breasts feel before their period. Breast tenderness is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. It usually starts around four to six weeks and lasts through the first trimester.

Increase in the breast size:
Your breasts start growing bigger and larger and they will continue to grow throughout pregnancy. They are evolving and preparing for the arrival of your baby. It’s common to go up a cup size or two, especially if it’s your first baby.

Changes in the nipples:
You may be able to see veins under the skin of your breasts and you may also find your nipples getting bigger and darker. After the first few months the areolas-the pigmented circle around the nipple will also get larger and darker. You may not have noticed the little bumps on your areolas before but now these bumps which are a type of oil producing glands called Montgomery’s tubercles, may become much more pronounced.
Around third month of pregnancy your breasts start producing colostrums, it is a yellowish kind of substance.

How can I reduce soreness?
Your best bet is to find a few good, supportive bras. Make sure you take the help of a sales person. Bras with under wires are less comfortable so avoid them. Go for a maternity bra as wearing a well-designed maternity bra is the best way to support your breasts. Regular massage with coconut oil or olive oil is also recommended. Moreover, you can soak yourself in a warm bath. It relaxes the body.

Whatever you do,make sure you take good care of your breasts for the whole nine months.
