Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a surgery that reconstructs the breast of the same size and shape as it was before. It is very helpful for women who have gone through mastectomy. Every year more than two lack women are affected by breast cancer only in America and have to undergo surgery. It can be very traumatizing and bring a low self esteem in a woman, but the new techniques in reconstruction can provide a woman with better choices. It helps her to complete the remaining breast cancer therapy successfully.

If you are planning to have a reconstruction surgery, discuss it with your surgeon. It is always better to understand the process and get all your doubts cleared. Choose your doctor very carefully.

You can either go for immediate reconstruction done at the same time as the mastectomy or delayed reconstruction, which is done later. The breast can be reconstructed from a woman’s own tissue, take from the abdomen or back or it can be done from an artificial implant. The reconstruction of nipple and aerola is done approximately six month later.

After breast reconstruction surgery you can feel tired and sore for a week which will be controlled through medicines. Discharge from the hospital will depend on the type of the surgery. Follow the instruction of your doctor carefully. Although you will be up and about in six to eight week but it may take one to two years for the tissues to heal completely. Not all surgeries are totally successful and you may not be satisfied with the outcome.

Another thing which you need to know is that the shape and size may be restored but the normal breast sensation may not be restored.

Remember, before going into surgery make sure you do a lot of research. Find the right doctor and make certain he is well qualified for the job.
