The vaginal bleeding after sex is medically referred to as post-coital bleeding. It may occur due to sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. Chlamydia is a type of bacterial infection that is generally transmitted through sexual activities or when an individual comes in contact with blood, semen or vaginal fluid. Gonorrhea is also a bacterial infection and is exceedingly infectious. It is a dangerous sexually transmitted disease which causes recurrent bleeding from the opening of the vagina and is accompanied with burning sensation. Both chlamydia and gonorrhea cause inflammation.

One of the main causes for vaginal bleeding post sexual intercourse is cervical dysplasia. In this health condition precancerous changes are observed in the epithelial cells forming the lining of the cervix. Risks for cervical dysplasia are sex before the age of 18 or multiple sexual partners or a past STDs history and birth to a child before the age of 16. Another cause for post-coital bleeding is trichomoniasis which is a disease caused by protozoan. It is generally transmitted during sexual intercourse and can also pass on to the newborns during vaginal birth by the affected mother. Its transmission is also possible through swimming pools, hot tubs, tap water, and urine on the toilet seats. Vaginitis may occur as a result of trichomoniasis.

Vaginitis or cervicitis, fibroid tumors, cervical polyps, vaginal yeast infections, uterine polyps and endometritis or adenomyosis are some other causes for vaginal bleeding after sex. Swelling or inflammation or infection of the vagina or cervix is called vaginitis or cervicitis. In cervical polyps conditions there are smooth, finger-like growth (red or purple colored) on the mucous layer of the cervical canal or the cervix.
