Celebrities who have anorexia and bulimia!

Anorexia and Bulimia in celebrities is very common.

Anorexia and Bulimia are the notorious eating disorders that affect more people around the globe that you think. And several more have successfully managed to hide the disease and even die from it!

Anorexia Nervosa is a psychological disorder causing the death of mostly teenage girls. In the extreme pursuit to lose weight, anorexics starve themselves to death. In extreme case, anorexic patients weigh 25% lesser than their normal body weight! But they still manage to hide that fact successfully from parents and colleagues! Patients with Bulimia, a related eating disorder, stuff themselves with food and then throw up to prevent themselves from gaining weight. Most take laxatives and diuretics to avoid growing fat and this can be really dangerous too.

Anorexia and Bulimia are common with people who are in the spotlight to perform better and look good all the time. As a result, they will do anything to lose weight and they will do anything to hide the fact that they are not eating either! As a result many celebrities are subjected to these eating disorders at some point in their lives. Common sportspersons, pop stars and actors who suffered from the disease are Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Princess Diana, etc who were always in the public eye and were exposed to really high levels of media criticism for their dressing and life style.

The pressure on them to look thin and trim was enormous. As a result, you will see celebrities who have battled with Anorexia or Bulimia all their lives. Many of them have these eating disorders complicated by other psychological issues like low self esteem, drug addiction, alcoholism, sexual abuse and failed relationships.

The most famous victim of these disorders is perhaps Princess Diana who had a lifelong battle with the disease compounded by her marital problems and low self esteem. Oprah Winfrey is one other person who battled with weight loss issues along with a history of sexual abuse. Most Hollywood actresses of yester years (Audrey Hepburn, Jane Fonda) as well as modern times (Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Calista Flockhart) have felt the pressure of stardom to fall victim to Bulimia and Anorexia. The glare of the public eye and the pressure to look good that Hollywood places on perfect figures have pressurized them to become victims of these dreaded eating disorders.

Some of the celebrities have come out into the open with their battle with the disease and checked into therapy centers that treat this condition. Some have written books about their experience like Paula Abdul, Jane Fonda, Victoria Beckham, and Gerry Halliwell. Even male celebrities have not escaped the clutches of this condition. Pop star Elton John struggled with Bulimia and drug abuse through the 1980’s. He also battled with problems of sexual identity and alcoholism.

Celebrities who have come out with their experience with these eating disorders have done a great service to battle the disorder.
