Chemotherapy and Hair loss
Chemotherapy is a treatment to stop cancer cells from growing. It is performed by using chemical agents. This treatment can be delivered orally or can be administered through veins. There are many side effects of this therapy like- vomiting, nausea, fatigue, etc. One major side effect is hair loss.
The healthy cells are damaged during chemotherapy and can result in loss of hair from all over the body, even your eyelashes and eyebrows. Although it is not necessary that everybody loses hair during this therapy. It depends on how aggressive your treatment is.
Some drugs cause no hair loss at all or only slight thinning but some can effect badly. You cannot prevent this from happening as there is no medicine or shampoo to help you out. However, the good news is that within six to eight weeks after the treatment your hair will grow back. Although it’s often seen that hair that come back are of a different color and texture. For example- many people with straight and light color hair get dark and curly hair after chemo therapy.
Hair loss becomes very embarrassing for many patients. To cope with this situation you can consult your doctor. Sometimes there is a choice of drug available which causes less hair loss. Also, using a cold cap can help in some types of cancer. But usually doctors don’t recommend it. Best thing is to buy a wig before you start loosing your hair. This will help the stylist create the best match or cut your hair short, because many people find loosing short hair less distressful. Since hair often do not fall out evenly keeping them short also makes them more manageable. Some people even shave their hair.
You can also use caps, hats and turbans. Moreover, you can check some cancer societies which help you look good and feel better. Have comfort in knowing that your hair will grow back in better condition.
