Cirrhosis Diet

Cirrhosis is an ailment of the liver. In this numerous widespread nodules get developed along with fibrosis. This excessive fibrosis and formation of nodules deform the structure of the liver. This in turn obstructs and interferes with the normal flow of blood through the liver.

Due to this the liver fails to do its operations and functions in normal manner. The healthy tissues get changed into scared ones. And the healthy functioning of the liver is prevented. One of the major causes is alcoholism and hepatitis C. In this condition the body’s ability to absorb the nutrients is badly effected, this causes malnutrition. Person suffering from this condition should follow proper diet.

Diet tips for cirrhosis:-

The amount of protein has to be correct. Excess of it will cause ammonia content to increase and less amount of it will affect the recovery process of the liver condition. With increase in sodium the water retention of the body also increases. Hence one should avoid food that has sodium like canned foods, dairy, ketchup, condiments and mayonnaise. Packed food has more amount of sodium. Hence foods that are fresh should be taken. One can even substitute salt with lime juice.

Non meat proteins, vitamin B, C and E are suggested. Avoid consumption of alcohol and shellfish. Avoid food with high salt content and iron content. See that you cook food in vessels that do not have iron.

Freshly brewed coffee can be consumed. Copper is not good, hence avoid eating mushrooms, nuts and chocolates. Unnecessary popping of pills or self medications should not be done. Use the ones that have been prescribed.

Boiled eggs are good. Fresh juices and vegetable extracts should be taken. Processed and tinned foods, sugary or spicy food stuff’s, oily and fried food, meats and food cooked in butter or oil should not be taken. Consume raw vegetables in form of salads.

Balanced and sensible eating during this condition is recommended.
