Cleft palate is the disconnection of the two sides of lip. In other words we can say that when the lips are disjoined then this condition is termed as cleft palate. This disjoint is not limited only with the tissues in fact the bones and the upper gum and jaws are also disjoined. Sometimes the cleft gap can be in the form of opening on the roof of the mouth. It can either happen on one side or on either side of the mouth. In the preliminary weeks of fetus formation the right as well as the left sides of lip grows together with the roof of the mouth. This happens when the growth is taking place in natural manner. It sometimes happens that these two sections fall short to meet. The separation over the upper lip is termed as cleft lip, while the defect of the palate is termed as cleft palate. In most of the cases both these condition occur simultaneously.

Cleft palate can be termed as congenital defect. Such defects happen at the preliminary stages of pregnancy. It has been seen that most of the cleft conditions are genetic as well as environmental. While the threat of its reoccurrence, also depends on numerous factors. It can depend on the number of persons suffering with this condition in a particular family.
