Complications With Acute Liver Failure

There are several complications that may arise due to liver failure, some of them are:-

Cerebral edema- In this condition excessive fluid gets accumulated in the brain. This fluid may develop pressure over the brain and can displace the brain tissue from its compartment. This can also deprive the brain from adequate supply of oxygen.

Bleeding disorders- With the liver failing it is not able to produce enough factors that clot the blood. It is natural to bleed from the gastrointestinal tract as the liver fails to clot the blood in rapid manner.

Infection- Patients with liver failure are more subjected to other kind of infections of the blood, urinary tract and respiratory tract.

Pulmonary edema- In this fluids develop in the lungs, this can lead to breathing difficulties.

Kidney failure- With the liver failure it is natural to develop kidney failure. In such cases the liver as well as the kidneys fails to function properly.

Treatment-

People with acute liver failure are admitted to ICU and monitored. The treatment depends on the cause and symptoms. The screening of blood, sputum and urine is done to check the infections. Under additional treatments electrolyte, supplementation with glucose and fluids are given. Sometimes liver transplantation becomes necessary. The surgery is complicated and lengthy. One has to find suitable donor to get the liver transplantation done.

One can to be very careful incase of liver failure. Be careful in taking acetaminophen and other medications. Avoid self medication. Stay away from taking alcohol and consuming tobacco. Do not indulge in recreational drugs as they are addictive in nature and can lead to numerous health problems. Be prompt with your vaccination, particularly when you are traveling. Among rare cases disorders in pregnancy can lead liver to fail; here prenatal care is must on regular basis. By following the preventive measures and line of treatment you can come of the acute liver failure.
