Heart problems present by birth or problems which occur due to the derangement in the development embryo in foetal life are termed as congenial heart diseases.
According to a very shocking statistic, eight new born out every thousand suffer from this disease. Although the majority of them are cured but unfortunately there are many who get disabled or die. Sadly, 95% of the times the reason due to which this problem occurs cannot be diagnosed beforehand due to which the prevention becomes impossible.
According to medical science the causes of congenial heart diseases can be many, For instance, it can be due to genes or some disease that occurred during pregnancy (e.g., rubella). Also, any medicine taken without the doctor’s recommendation during pregnancy can result in heart problems within infants. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy or mal nutrition can cause this problem as well. Moreover, infants of older mothers are also prone to birth defects.
There are also many symptoms that help in the detection of heart problem in a baby, Symptoms like, shortness of breath due to retention of fluids in the lungs or difficulty in breathing are two of the most important symptoms. Also, another indication is the baby’s lips and skin turning blue which happens due to the mixing of the blue blood from the veins with the red blood from the lungs.
Although some defects are mild and heal by themselves with time, nevertheless they need careful monitoring. But unfortunately, there are certain defects which need medical treatment and surgery. Such children require a lot of physical as well as mental support. These treatments are extremely expensive and mentally draining.
