Babies have no other way to tell there requirement other than crying. If he is hungry, he will cry, if he is angry, he will cry and if he is uncomfortable, he will again cry. It takes time for a new parent to learn what the different kinds of crying mean and the only way to figure that out is by discovering what stops it. Here are some reasons and their remedies:

Hunger:
If the child did not take the last feed properly or is due for second feed then he may start crying out of hunger. He will be quieter when offered a feed.

Thirst:
Normally babies don’t require much water. But if the weather is hot or the baby has fever then he maybe thirsty.

Infants generally give up sudden shriek when they wet their nappy. Change the diaper if soiled.

Discomfort:
If the child is suffering of nappy rash, don’t use plastic pants and keep the nappy off as much as possible.  If the baby is restless due to cold or hot weather then try to find the reason of the discomfort and remove it.

Colic:
If the baby draws up his legs while crying or suddenly cries and then relaxes and while crying passes a lot of wind, the stomach is hard to touch. Try to sooth the baby by holding him over shoulder and consult a doctor.

Loneliness and boredom:
If the baby stops crying when it sees you and again starts crying when left alone then try to hold him for sometime or crop him up so he can see you. But be careful because it can become a habit that may be difficult to break.

Tired:
If the baby is crying in a moaning sought. Then he must be tired and ready to sleep. Lye down with the baby or hold him in your arms and sing a lullaby. He may go off to sleep.

Illness:
If the baby is crying non stop, fails to stop even when comforted, is not taking feed, has fever, vomiting or diarrhea. Consult a doctor as soon as possible but don’t get jumpy or nervous as this will affect the baby also.
