Dealing with a Dry Complexion
Come winter and your skin starts to feel dry, stretchy and starts to peel. You will find that no amount of moisturizer will get it back to normal at all. If you have persistent dry skin then its time to get it treated or you could land up with wrinkles.
What does dry skin mean and how does it happen?
Xerosis is the dermatological term for dry skin. The skin needs a basic amount of moisture to keep its suppleness, elasticity and to prevent it from looking old sooner. Moisture in the skin also protects it from the harmful effects of UV rays and exposure to pollutants and other environmental hazards. Change in temperature, air conditioning and heating, thyroid, genetic and hereditary diseases, old age and excessive use of cosmetic products are all reasons why people have or develop dry skin.
How can I try to control dry skin?
Check your make up ingredients- Checking your cosmetic’s ingredients can go a long way in preventing dry skin. For example, parabens used in products increase their shelf life but are known to cause cancer in the long run, and alcohol in cleansers can trigger toxic reactions and lead to further skin distress and problems.
Instead scour the shelves (and fork out a little extra money) for more pure ingredients such as botanical oils (almond, camphor, lime, avocado, and olive) in your cosmetic bottles for smoother, younger and fresher skin.
Eat a balanced diet- Understanding the need for a well-balanced, nutritious diet is essential as it plays a vital role in maintaining healthy skin. Including seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, fish and fruits along with milk, honey, eggs, yeast and good vegetable oils will prevent skin from turning dry.
Increase the amount of vitamins and minerals you eat- Deficiency in iron, iodine, vitamin B and C and protein usually leads to flaky skin, blackheads and whiteheads and fine wrinkles and lines. Vitamin B1 is also known to help improve skin circulation and regular exercise and drinking plenty of water ensures a fit and healthy system which in turns keeps toxins and illnesses at bay.
Simple Home remedies do work- Home remedies are a dime-a-dozen and have proved effective over generations. For example: A teaspoon of almond oil mixed with some milk cream and lime juice is effective against rough, dry skin, whereas a mixture of honey, olive oil, turmeric powder and sandalwood powder rejuvenate dry, parched skin. These are not only a great way to save costs, but they double-up as a spa experience at home!
