Dealing with a scaly complexion
Scaly skin is very similar to dry skin, and can be caused by the same factors. While some people have scaly skin only in winter, others face perpetually flaky and scaly complexions all through the year.
While this can be both embarrassing and a source of constant worry and irritation, the cause of this common problem need not be one of great stress, and can be cured using simple home remedies, basic medication or even by taking a helping hand from the cosmetic market.
What makes skin scaly?
In winter for instance, pores tend to contract in the cold causing them to lock in the sebaceous secretions. This leads to an increase of dandruff, acne, and fungal infections and patchy, scaly skin is indicative of any or all of these problems. Cold weather or a hot, dry climate also leads to skin dehydration, causing it to flake, look red and scaly.
What can you do to control it?
There are several simple methods to keep your skin looking hydrated and soft. You can start by drinking plenty of water which aids in keeping skin naturally hydrated. Try using either a medicated cream (as prescribed by a physician) or lotion, or a moisturizer that is best suited to your skin. You will also go a long way in keeping your skin peachy and healthy looking.
Stick to a good beauty regime
Following the oft-repeated mantra of cleansing, toning and moisturizing is also effective. Bathing in hot water should be avoided as this strips skin of essential natural oils, and lukewarm or warm water should be used instead. Try massaging a little of your favorite oil into your skin before a bath is also recommended.
Excessive usage of soap dries out skin, and you should try using colloidal oatmeal as a soap substitute instead. Use moisturizers and lotions which have lots of shea butter, avocado, fatty acids, omega acids and Vitamin C.
Also the golden rule always applies: don’t over-expose your skin to a plethora of treatments and cosmetic rituals as these tend to strip the skin of its innate properties and elastics which help protect and keep it healthy, naturally.
