Dealing with anger issues
Anger is a natural emotion known to man. Its causes vary from irritation to intense rage. It may also be triggered by external or internal events, even memories that relate to traumatic events. Anger is an essential emotion as well because it is useful when we are attacked and need to defend ourselves.
Anger, though necessary, in excess amounts can disrupt ones personal and professional life. The expression of it may be so destructive that it may seriously hinder various sectors of one’s life. It is therefore, very necessary to correct such a situation.
There are three ways in which anger may be expressed. Firstly, one may clearly state what his problem is and what he intends to do about it, without hurting others. This does not mean one necessarily has to be pushy. It means that one should be respectful of oneself and of others. Secondly, one may suppress his or her anger. This involves suppressing the anger, not thinking about it and trying to use it constructively. Finally, one may calm himself down externally and internally and pacify the enraged feeling.
Certain people suffer from extreme rage and uncontrolled anger due to genetic or psychological problems, such people must resort to certain strategies to take care of this problem.
Relaxation is one such technique. One may relax by taking deep breaths, using imagery or repeating a soothing phrase such as “calm down”.
Cognitive restructuring can also help. It might help in changing the way you think and allow you to understand that getting angry about something is neither going to fix it nor is it going to make you feel better.
Angry people often jump to conclusions and do not think before saying something when they are angry. This should be replaced by better communication by thinking about everything one says and also about the inner meaning, importance of the statement of the other person involved in the conversation.
Use of humor can also prove to be fruitful in this regard, as it calms the person down. One might also consider a change in his or her environment. Sometimes a problem might make one feel that it is an entrapment. In such a scenario, one should consider taking a break from such stressful situations. This may leave him composed and ready to take on the situation after a while.
