Dealing With The Empty Nest Syndrome

When the children fly away from the family nest to make there own space, it is hard to let them go, but It is very important for the parents to realize that no matter how deep their bond is with their children, they should not make them the sole purpose of their life.It is okay to feel sad and cry now and then, but you should accept the fact that your children have gone. Acceptance is very important, and once you are in total peace with the facts, work on how to overcome the emptiness.

First of all, Start taking some hobby classes and do something with the free time. It’s said that “an empty mind is a devils workshop”. If you keep yourself occupied with something you love doing, their (children) lack of presence won’t hurt you so much.

Avoid falling into boring routines. Re focus on your marriage, consider this an opportunity to bring the magic back in your life. Talk to your spouse make plans, go on a trip you always wanted to. Make it your second honeymoon.

Renovate your kid’s room. Keeping it the same way will make your sentiments hurt whenever you look at it.Instead turn it into your own personal haven or a gym.

Try to make things for your Childs new home. This will make you feel connected. No need to over do it but you can always buy a set of sheets or cutlery or small knick knacks. Even buying some grocery items is not such a bad idea.

Socialize. Interact with your friends. Ask for their support. You can also meet people who have gone through the same phase. They can provide you with some helpful tips and advise.

Try to do some charity work .Dong something positive with the free time can be very helpful. It will make you feel good as a human being.

Don’t compare yourself with others. Some may have overcome this emptiness sooner but some take a little longer. You are doing a fine job.

In some cases when a mother is too attached with her children she gets a separation anxiety, cries excessively and does not want to do anything. Then a professional help is a must. The psychiatrist will help her deal with the situation more calmly and might even prescribe certain medicines initially.

It is a new beginning for your child and same is with you, make the best of it. It will become better with time.
