Do Opposites Really Attract
Every one needs to have meaningful relationships in their life. Since we are all essentially social beings, we all feel the need to be emotionally close to people. At any given point in time, millions of people are looking for their soul mates – people who they want to connect with emotionally and physically. This brings us to an excellent point.
When you first meet someone, what attracts you the most? Is it how they present themselves or is it a certain trait in their physical appearance or personality? Most of the times, you would probably look for someone who is similar to you, with common interests or background. While differences do make life more thrilling, we like to be with people that we have something in common with. That is perhaps because we can simply relate better with those who are like us.
Traditionally, we tend to make familial alliances with people who come from similar social, economic and cultural backgrounds. Ideally, a truly enriching relationship would be that where two people complement each other in every aspect. Just suppose for instance that you were a deeply religious, not-so-outgoing person. Now imagine if you were dating a punk rocker who had several piercing all over their body and dyed hair. Now imagine they like to party every night too. Would you be able to deal with that? What are the chances of you two hitting it off real well?
While it is great to spend some time and share some experiences with those who are much different than us, it might be difficult to carry on a long term relationship with them. However, this doesn’t mean that opposites do not attract. Sparks obviously fly when two people who are unlike attract. A relationship between two opposites can be very fulfilling and really thrilling. But in the long run, couples who are alike are more likely to stick together and have a good relationship.
