There is no harm in explaining and discussing each others feelings. But the parents should also take into consideration that not all the stuffs can be understood by the kids.
The next is helping to cope, the kids with the situation. Your child should never ever feel that he/she is devoid of the unconditional love that was showered when both the parents were staying together. They should still be loved and assure that the parents will be there at any phase of life whenever he/she needs them. Let the explanation of divorce that you are giving is genuine, especially when you are breaking it for the first time. Make things clear that this was their decision and the kids are in no way responsible for this.
Even after this your kids may need to be explained a number of times. Do not complicate things and explain things in simplest possible way. Be clear with the answers and do not hesitate to answer to the numerous queries that the children will be putting in front of you. After all the parents have to be answerable for all. Acknowledge that you will also be missing the kid and the family and assure that you will be in constant touch with them. Never ever try to confuse the loyalty or the love for the other parent. The children very well understand that the parents are unhappy with one another. Avoid using abusive or bad language especially in front of the children. This will frustrate the child even more. If they hear a lot of negativity then it will affect them even more.
Divorce also means losing the home that one is so used to. The kids may loose their school; friends and coping with all these changes might not be easy for the young mind and hearts. Remember a feeling of culpability and abandonment still remains in the minds of children and these scars that are left in the mind can take years to heal.
