Does fish oil promote breast cancer?

Breast cancer is considered as one of the most fatal cancer types, especially for women. Every year, thousands of deaths are attributed to this particular disease only.

It is characterized by a change in the color of skin, formation of lumps, rashes, alteration in shape and size of the breast or blood like release from the nipples. It proceeds through various stages and as it progresses the chances for a complete recovery become very slim!

Though the primary causes behind the occurrence of breast cancer are hereditary and genetics, there is a strong link between dietary habits and intake of foods that can also cause breast cancer. There has been no research to prove this but one school of thought exists that fish oil can cause and aggravate existing breast cancer.

Culinary items prepared from fishes having Omega 3 fatty acids are considered safer in terms of carcinogenic properties, as compared to fish items containing omega 6 fatty acids. Some fish-supplemented oils are said to cause fewer colorectal tumors in men while aggravating breast cancers in women. The reasoning for this is that since fish items are high in calorie content, they produce excess fat which gets deposited and results in lump formation. These fatty lumps are just the ones which later go on to develop into serious stages of breast cancer.

Fish is as an integral part of many people’s diet, but it can be really difficult to prove that is a sound reason and causative factor behind breast cancer. Most of the cancers are supposed to originate from physical inactivity and high fat and calorie content of the patients diet. Fish contains saturated oils and fats in high proportion.

One reasoning is that it stimulates the production of bile in the body which gets deposited and is converted into apcholic acid which is a proven carcinogen.

Secondly, fish oil contains high-density lipoproteins which aggravate the impact of tumor cells in the body. The essence of the tentative research is there should be fat intake but definitely of the right type of fat which cannot aggravate breast cancer or even cause it. If one is eating the wrong kind of fat, it can be even more dangerous.

Thus, not only family history and hereditary genes, but also the dietary habits of a person make much difference in determining the likelihood of cancers. Its safe to say that till research does not come up with substantial proof on this aspect of fish oil; its a good idea to decrease your intake of the supplement immediately!
