Eczema – a skin menace
Eczema or dermatitis is a form of skin disease that causes the inflammation of the skin. It collectively comprises of a number of skin conditions such as dryness of skin, recurrent skin rashes, redness, crusting, flaking, itchiness, oozing and even bleeding. The exact cause of eczema is not known clearly though it is believed to be caused by an abnormal functioning of the immune system. Sometimes it results from a host of substances which a person may be allergic to. Environmental factors, humidity and changes of temperature may also lead to an outbreak of this disease.
Atopic eczema is a form of eczema that is said to be hereditary in nature, occurring in people having a family history of asthma. Another form known as contact dermatitis, may result either from some form of allergen (such as poison ivy) or from an irritant (such as detergent); sometimes it may result from a substance that acts both as an allergen as well as an irritant. Besides these there are other forms of this disease. It may develop in any part of the body, although it is frequently found occurring in regions around one’s face, neck, elbows and ankles.
Treatment of eczema involves medication accompanied by certain lifestyle changes. Further it also depends on age, health status and the severity of the condition. The treatment of this disease is primarily focused at controlling the inflammation, itching and prevention of further deterioration of the the existing condition. The inflammations are commonly treated with Corticosteroid ointments. In cases where the itching is severe, anti-histamines may be administered orally. The sedative types of anti-histamine drugs are effective in controlling the itch.
Further, those suffering from atopic dermatitis should engage in the regular use of some suitable moisturizer along with gentle cleansing to keep the skin hydrated. Moisturizers create prevent the skin from losing its moisture thereby decreasing dryness, itch and cracking.
Cleansing the skin gently rids the surface of dirt, oil and bacteria thereby decreasing the chances of further deterioration. However one must be careful not to scrub or peel the affected skin parts as that will only aggravate the condition. In choosing a suitable moisturizer, cleanser or emollient it is better to consult a dermatologist who can examine the skin condition and recommend a suitable product.
