Female Fertility Test

When a couple fails to achieve pregnancy even after trying for 12 months, both partners should go through a complete physical and medical evaluation.

There are several tests, which can be done to assess the fertility of male and  fertility of female. In this article, we will discuss about the female fertility tests.

Some of the female fertility tests can be performed at home whereas others are done by the fertility specialists or your doctor. The first test will be performed by your fertility specialist to establish a baseline.

Your follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) will be measured on the 3rd day of your cycle. Normally, your fertility specialist will perform the following tests during your 1st cycle.

Cervical Mucus Tests – This test involves a postcoital test and may also include a bacterial screening. It determines whether the sperm is able to make a way into and stay alive in the cervical mucus.

Ultrasound Tests – This test is performed to evaluate the thickness of the uterus lining, check the development of the follicles during a cycle, and confirm the health of ovaries and the uterus. Two or three days later, an ultrasound may be conducted to verify the release of an egg.

Laparoscopy - It is a surgical method to test the fertility in female. In this method, a small illuminated tube is inserted through an opening near your naval. It facilitates your doctor to look at the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterus and allows him/her to locate scar tissues, abnormalities, blockages, and endometriosis.

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) – In HSG method x-ray of your fallopian tubes and uterus is taken by a special kind of machine called Hysterosalpingogram. Firstly, a blue dye is injected into your fallopian tubes and uterus through the cervix. After this, x-ray is taken. HSG tool is usually used to find out if there is any blockage or some other problems.

Hysteroscopy - This method may be used if any problem is indicated by the HSG method. A fiber optic telescope is inserted into the uterus through the vagina and cervix to see if there is any problem.

Endometrial Biopsy – In this procedure, a small sample of endometrial tissue is taken after 21 days of your cycle. Endometrial biopsy allows your doctor to evaluate if there is a hormonal balance. This test is useful in case of women who have experienced multiple miscarriages.
