Five Least Painful Spots For Tattooing

Tattoos are fun, funky and they are trendy too. But they can be painful! If you are planning a tattoo; here are a few tips on where to get the least painful tattoos done!

How does the process work?

The process involves a fine needle or needles etching out an image or drawing on the skin with the use of colour (can be artificial or natural dye). The colour usually only penetrates the first epidermal layer of the skin, but this does not diminish the pain. But there are certain parts of the body which experience more pain than others. This can be for a number of reasons, but the most common are the presence of nerves close to the skin’s surface, a muscle that lies directly under the skin, fine or thin skin, or right above a bone – and contrary to popular belief, a spot that you find ticklish is likely to hurt a lot and its definitely not going to feel funny!

So where do I do it? And where do I not do it?

Do tattooing where the skin is tougher and thicker and better able to hold the color of the drawings. The head, neck and face is usually for the daring, as it has fine skin, protruding bone and is the center for a lot of nerves; and it’s a really, really painful area too . Behind the ears and the nape of the neck are also chosen for reasons such as the fact that a tattoo in these areas is easier to hide when you choose to do so. Tattoos on the chest and breast are common and lots of men and women favor these areas.

The artwork here is easy to conceal, and is not very painful as the upper back and the lower back have far lesser nerves as compared to other regions. The rib cage and abdomen are known to be painful places to get one, as the ribs are very close to the skin, and the skin on the abdomen is soft and vulnerable. The thighs, calves, ankles and feet are associated with varying levels of pain too. While the calves are among the least painful spots for a tattoo on the body, the ankles with their very fine bones close to the skin surface aren’t for the faint-hearted. The arms and back are most popular as these areas tend to have thicker skin and lesser nerve centers and exposed bone.

The bottom line is that when you poke yourself with a needle ; its going to pain. I’m not really a fan of tattooing so I would really advice you not to do it simply because I’m a little squeamish. But if you want to then the five least painful spots for a tattoo are: calves, back, arms, chest and thighs.
