Health problems due to lack of sleep

According to the sleep disorder expert’s lack of sleep can lead to numerous mental and cardio logical problems. In fact, researchers now insist that all doctors must check the sleep history of the patients along with conducting medical tests.

Remember, Proper sleep is just as important as exercise and healthy diet. It is one of the simplest affairs we can do to stay healthy and energetic.

The amount of sleep required depends from person to person but on average, 8 hours of sleep is enough.

Sleep experts say that the biggest culprit of sleep deprivation is an imbalanced lifestyle.Working late, partying late, bad eating habits have aggravated sleep disorders.

Sleeping disorders have several consequences.

For instance they can lead to obesity, depression, stroke and diabetes. Moreover, lack of sleep can have a fatal effect on the functioning of the immune system leaving us more susceptible to other diseases and disorders like cancer and even the common cold as our body is not able to re generate the natural killer cells.

Researchers also say that chronic sleep loss can create imbalance in our hormones and can even hamper the processing of carbohydrates. Lack of sleep also causes disturbances as brain chemicals get exhausted slowly.

It is not because of the lack of sleeping time or excessive work in every case which causes a person to stay awake. This could also occur due to a medical condition. Insomnia and sleep apnoea (which is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep)  are two of such conditions which have significant associated health costs.

If a person is diagnosed with either of the two, then it’s important to take proper medical help since the consequences can be devastating.

If the sleeping problem is in its initial stage then a few simple changes to how we approach sleep can make a big difference:

For instance, keep your bed room at a comfortable temperature. It should neither be too hot nor too cold.
Make sure the bed and mattress is comfortable and the room is dark and quiet. Eat your dinner two to three hours before sleeping as eating makes our metabolism fast and makes our brain active.

Cut down on the consumption of your tea and caffeine. Moreover, some people also benefit by a hot cup of milk or a warm bath before getting into bed.

Remember, if you are facing trouble sleeping, night after night or are always tired the next day, you must consult a doctor. Lack of sleep can be injurious to health.
