Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is not about depriving yourself of the foods you love but about eating what you love intelligently. The key lye’s in striking a balance. Eat variety of foods from each food group but remember, to maintain an equilibrium between the food that you love (which might not be very nutritious) and healthy wholesome food.

There are around 40 different types of nutrients that are required for good health which means you really need to adopt numerous kinds of food in your diet. Try to make your plate as colorful as possible. To be sincerely accurate about your nutritional regime, use the food guide pyramid.

According to this pyramid, you need to add plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables in your pattern of eating. You must take three servings of whole grains, two to four servings of fruits and three to five servings of vegetables.  Proteins are also a must in a diet. Various sources such as, fish, eggs, beans nuts etc contain a good amount of protein. Remember, the portion size of your food should be reasonable.

Moreover, make sure you don’t miss any meal as it sends the body into a starvation mode. Snacking in between is good as it curbs your hunger pans but the snacks should be healthy and should not become an entire meal. Reconnect with the joy of eating. Eat mouth watering dishes. This water known as saliva helps in digestion. Just make sure when you eat a fatty food you cut back on your portion or share it with a friend.

Eat slowly, do it the way French do it. They don’t rush the whole affair as it takes twenty minutes for the stomach to send the message to the brain that it is full. Make sure you keep your salt intake in check. Excess salt consumption can lead to high blood pressure and water retention. Use lemon juice, pepper or other seasonings as a substitute to salt.

Remember, to be able to improve your food habits you need to first be aware of where you are going wrong. For that matter, make a list of what you eat, analyze it and then gradually make the changes. Remember, changing too much too fast can also get in the way of success.

Also, drink plenty of water. Water helps the body to get rid of waste and regulates the temperature. Most healthy adults need 8 to 10 medium glasses of water everyday. Remember, there is no such thing as good food or bad food. There is no harm eating cakes, pastries pizzas and burgers. Key is in balancing them. You can eat that burger but make it small with lots of salad instead of French fries.
