Five Healthy Heart Habits That Can Save Your Life

Cardiovascular ailments are one of the leading killer diseases in the country today. A lot of people around the country are suffering from at least a single type of cardiovascular diseases and some of these sufferers land in the hospital every now and then with severe problems.

According to Dr. Richard Stein, the director of preventive cardiology at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, one can effectively lower his or her heart disease level by eating a healthy diet loaded with fiber and fish, cutting back on sodium, getting plenty of exercise, keeping ones weight in check and properly managing stress.

Getting Into Healthy Habits

Healthy eating habits are essential to stay in good physical shape. People should make it a habit to consume fiber rich food and limit their consumption of saturated fat to about 7 percent of their daily calorie needs. Moreover, people should eat more fish to stay in top shape. According to Dr. Stein, oily fish like salmon and mackerel contained heart friendly omega-3 fatty acids so people should have fish in their dining tables at least twice a week. When it comes to sodium, people should see to it that they do not take more than a teaspoon of salt in one day. Forget about those greasy and salty French fries at the fast food center. Those fries are not only loaded with salt; they are also notoriously filled with trans fats.

Cutting back on sodium can actually decrease the work load on your heart by decreasing the amount of water present in blood. The lesser the amount of blood, the lesser the work load on yoru heart and the healthier it is in the long run!

Aside from good diet, exercise can also help lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Low impact aerobics, walking and jogging are some of the forms of exercise that are beneficial to health. Moreover, exercise is essential to weight management. People who want to stay fit and healthy need to exercise at least 20 minutes a day and more if they need to lose weight and get back into shape.

Proper stress management is another heart friendly habit. Studies show that stress is one of the main factors that drive up the risk of cardiovascular disease in most Americans. Effective stress management is therefore very important to avoid heart ailments.
