Heat stroke

Heat stroke is a menacing form of hyperthermia. Heat stroke is characterized by high temperature with physical and neurological problems. Heat stroke has been recognized as a medical emergency which if not properly treated in due time, can prove to be fatal for the victim.

Infants, senior citizens, athletes and people who are subjected to tough physical labor in the sun are most prone to heat strokes.

The mechanism of the body to dissipate heat in extreme temperature is by sweating or radiating it through the skin. However, in excess of heat, very humid conditions and heavy exertion under the sun, this mechanism can malfunction causing a heat stroke. Heat stroke may also be caused by dehydration. Dehydration can hamper the heat dissipating mechanism of a person, as he is not able to sweat adequately.

It is also necessary to know the symptoms of heat stroke to identify one as early as possible. A person suffering from heat stroke has very high temperature accompanied by marked absence of perspiration, flushed red dry skin and rapid pulse.

He may also experience difficulty in breathing. Heat stroke also is known to cause hallucinations, disorientation, agitation and seizure. In extreme cases a heat stroke might give rise to coma.

Heat stroke being very dangerous in nature can cause permanent organ damage or even death to the victim. Under such circumstances, it is very essential to take immediate steps to safeguard the victim. The victim must be placed in a shady area to be cooled down.

Water should be applied on the victim after his clothing is removed. To promote perspiration and evaporation, the victim should be fanned and ice packs should be placed under his groins and armpits. Such treatment should be continued till the body temperature drops to 100-102 degree Fahrenheit. The emergency services should be notified as soon as possible.

Heat stroke can be prevented by taking some basic precautions. One should always remember not to over exert oneself physically in the scorching heat. Drinking plenty of water to remain hydrated is a must. Drinks containing alcohol or caffeine should be avoided. Wearing hats, light colored and loose clothes in summer also proves to be helpful in this regard.
