Herbs For Good Health
Using herbs in the treatment of diseases dates back to ancient civilization. In the middle ages herbs were credited with mystical and supernatural powers of healing. In modern times this significance of the herbs has been lost but recently medical science has shown a growing interest in herbs and their benefits:
Turmeric is a spice from India. It gives a golden color to the dish. There are many health properties in turmeric. For instance, it prevents bad cholesterol and helps to keep the liver healthy. Also, due to its anti-inflammatory property it is helpful in joint pains. Turmeric contains anti-oxidants which help in improving healthy skin. It has been found that the countries with high turmeric consumption have lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease.
Basil is another seasoning which is full of medicinal purposes. Basil aids in digestion and due to its anti spasmodic properties it is used for nausea and motion sickness. Dried basal is good for nose and throat infection. Basil can be used for flavoring the dishes as well, but make sure you add it to the dish just before serving as the heat takes away the vitamins and minerals.
Ginger is a natural spice and is known world wide for its smell and pungent taste. It has an ability to relax the muscles which helps in bringing relief to menstrual cramps and indigestion. It also stimulates the flow of bile and helps in digestion. Being spicy and hot in character it warms the body and treats cold, cough and flue and also improves weak and slow pulses.
Rosemary is found in the Mediterranean region. The leaves of rosemary are highly aromatic and their flavor hints both lemon and pine. It stimulates and enhances memory and protects the brain from Alzheimer’s disease. It also promotes circulatory system and helps in combating hair loss, acne, pimples and boils.
It is best to pick herbs in the morning when their oils are at their highest concentration. Packaged herbs loose their potency, fresh grown hold the most value for its purpose. Try using different types of herbs while cooking.
