Herbs in Cooking

Herb plants are known for their various qualities. They are used for healing, flavoring foods, and even used as an appealing addition to the salads. Each herb has a likeness for certain kind foods. This is how specific herbs can be used in specific foods.

Basil:
Fresh basil adds that extra bit of goodness to tomato dishes, tomato sauces and even salads. Make sure, the basil you use is freshly chopped.

Mint:
Mint has always been an ever popular herb used for several reasons. Fresh mint leaves can be used as a mouth freshener. These leaves also give a fresh flavor when added to fruit cups and drinks.

Oregano:
Oregano is used generously in spaghetti, pasta and pizzas. It can also be used in salads, soups, stews, potatoes and cooked veggies.

Savory:
Savory works great when added to dishes made of beans and salad. This herb can be eaten both in winters and in summers.

Best way to use the herbs:
The best way to bring out herb flavor is by heating it. You can also let the herbs stand out in room temperature to make their flavor come out.

Another thing that needs to be kept in mind, while using herbs effectively is -if you are planning to add herbs into longer cooking dishes such as- soups and stews, then make sure you use a tied bunch of fresh herb sprigs, which can be removed easily.

Also, if you plan on making a home made herb vinegar, then put a desirable amount of herb sprigs in the bottle and add vinegar, close cap and store it for a month before using it. Also, If you like herb salt then a very easy way of making it is by intermixing in a blender six table spoons of dry herb combination with approximately one cup salt.
