How Smoking Leads To Diabetes?
We all know that smoking kills. We knowingly indulge in it. It is one of the lead causes of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. The effects of tobacco are many particularly for diabetes. The main drug in tobacco is nicotine; it is a highly addictive drug. There is a psychological aspect that leads to smoking.
One may find it difficult to get rid of habit. People who suffer from diabetes are incapable of producing enough insulin, which can turn sugar into energy. But people who smoke are subjected to greater risks.
One can say that diabetes is indeed a serious problem. It can lead to stroke and other heart diseases. The quality of life as well as the life expectancy gets reduced to a great extent. The people who suffer from diabetes follow regular fitness routine to maintain a good health and continue smoking then their effort goes waste.
Some of the harmful effects of smoking in a diabetic are:-
Due to smoking the oxygen supply to the body gets affected this in turn can lead to heart attack. The blood glucose levels also shoot up and also the blood cholesterol levels also increases. The blood pressure can also get raised. If a person is suffering from and problems related with the kidneys or of the nerves then the chances of stroke also increases. Erectile dysfunction and infection in the blood vessels are commonly noticed.
In type one and type two diabetic mellitus the micro- macro vascular complications increases. Diabetic nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy also increase.
If decide to quit smoking, its good, but there are some problems that are faced especially after quitting smoking. The initial three months are extremely difficult. There is a desire to get back to smoking and psychologically the patient may find dependent. One can chew a gum or can take some water, just try to keep the hands engaged and mind distracted to something else.
Its better to avoid sitting amidst of smokers, as it may become difficult for you to avoid taking one puff and you may gradually again slip back to the habit. Some people may put on weight after giving up the smoking habit, its better to talk to dietician about the matter. And always keep in touch with the health care provider after you have quitted. Sometimes there may be changes in the medications prescribed by the medical advisor.
