How soon a cancer survivor, can exercise?
It is very difficult to get back in routine for a person who has undergone a cancer surgery. The paroxysms of chemotherapy and other trauma must be fresh. Life takes time to function back in a normal way. During this time exercising would be the end thing that you would be keen to do.
Breast cancer often leaves a patient shattered and traumatized. The most common complain is unbearable pain in the arm, swollen limbs, the other treatments like, chemotherapy and hormone therapy, further adds to the woes. One definitely wants to rest. Previously, it was recommended by the doctors to take ample bed rest and to keep themselves, away from any kind of strain.
However in recent times the perception has changed. A moderate exercise program is suggested, done for faster recovery and improved working efficiency and ability after the surgery. Recent studies are testimony to it. The quality of life is seen to be more with moderate exercising program.
But that doesn’t mean that one should jump back to heavy weight training sessions or rigorous forms of exercises.
The fitness regime has to designed as per individual capacity and condition. Among breast cancer survivor’s physical therapy is done to improve the range of motion and improving strength of the arm. Walking is considered as the best form of exercises.
Doctors recommend that one can get back to moderate fitness routine at the earnest. The sooner the better. By getting in to the routine the chances of fatigue and reluctance could be evaded. Determination and motivation should go hand in hand. Sticking with the routine will yield results in a better way.
But entering into a physical fitness routine one can perk up the quality of life. The strength and vitality of the arm can be gained soon after the surgery. The sense of control is increased and there is definite improvement of self image.
The other symptoms that are resultant on account of adjuvant therapies like depression, anxiety, sleeplessness and fatigue can be alleviated.
