How To Deal With Anxiety?

Anxiety can be defined as a physiological and psychological state which creates an uncomfortable feeling that is typically associated with uneasiness, apprehension, or worry. Why some people suffer from anxiety attacks while others do not is something of a mystery but studies have shown that stressful life events both positive and negative (i.e., marriage, graduation, birth of a baby, etc.) may have a part in influencing a panic attack. Anyone, at any age, could have an attack; however, usually people younger than thirty have a high number of first attacks.

Treatment can include both medication and therapy. Medication can help the body adapt to the changes in the individual’s nervous system. It is only required if the panic attacks are very serious in nature, otherwise just learning to better manage stress can make a big difference. There are several things you can do to better cope with your anxiety without getting overwhelmed.

For instance, when ever you feel suffocated, go out for a walk or hit the gym. Get your endorphins pumping. Moreover, be very selective about your food and drinking habits. Avoid caffeine as it adds on to the feeling of uneasiness and tension. Foods such as chocolate which contain coffee should be let alone. Also, if possible buy yourself a ‘white-noise’ machine– The soothing sound of this equipment will help you fall and stay asleep. A good night’s sleep is very important when you’re stressed, since sleep deprivation can fuel anxiety.

Do your own therapy by sitting down and writing out all the fears you have about that one thing that gives you jitters and anxiety. For instance, if its finances, write down what would happen if you lose your job, if you can’t pay your bills on time etc. Be sure you write down the worst thing that could happen. Then, rate them on how likely they are to happen. Surprisingly you will find that more than half of your fears are irrelevant and won’t even occur. This knowledge will definitely help decrease your anxiety.

Lastly, they say laughter is the best medicine. Laughing stimulates endorphins that help diminish stress hormones (which contribute to that feeling of anxiety). Hence make sure you stay happy. If you ever feel low you can watch a humorous movie or television soap.
