How to Deal with Falling in Love with your Best Friend
There is nothing new about being attracted to your best friend of the opposite sex. It is a common thing to develop feelings for your closest buddy. However, in such a scenario the most important thing is to know if the girl/boy also has the same feelings for you.
If you both feel the same way but are shy to tell then spend more time together so that you get a chance to communicate your feelings. For that matter, you can go to places where you get some privacy and you can ask some personal questions. Don’t come out too strongly. Subtle gestures will automatically lead to more closeness.
Offer a hug and see his/her reaction. If they like it you can go to the next level but if they don’t reciprocate then just leave it there and move on. The partner will generally reciprocate if they have feelings for you. However, if the low risk way to see where your relationship is going is not working then instead of playing the guessing game tell her/him honestly about your feelings. But don’t be too strong as it can scare the friend off.
Remember, sometimes it goes well but sometimes it does not. Still you need to take a chance and take the first step in breaking the ice. Most of the time the relationships are made long in advance and are just waiting to happen.
However, if the girl is already in a relationship with someone else then the respectful thing to do is to keep your feelings to yourself, otherwise you will lose a good friend. Make a quick get away if you are rejected and with time you will be comfortable in resuming your friendship.
Never try to break up his or her relationship with someone else. Disclose your feelings only if she/he is available. Best would be to cherish your friendship. A true friendship is more valuable than anything else.
Personally I don’t believe in having a best friend of the opposite sex because no matter what, one of them is going to have stronger “non plutonic” feelings for the other leading to hurt.
