How To Get Along With Your Sister-In Law

A marriage is a sacred liaison which requires you to not only tie the knot with your husband but also with his entire immediate family. One of such relationships which you have to make work is the one with your sister in-law. Here are a few tips that might help you to keep the boat floating:

Give her time to adjust with you:
Whether your sister in law is older or younger than you; make sure you always respect her. It is a fact that siblings tend to feel jealous and insecure of each others partners. They do not like their space being invaded. Hence, give her sometime to adjust. If she acts a little awkwardly or indifferent with you initially, try ignoring that rather than making an issue out of it. Soon you will realize that she is coming through and your relationship is improving.

Compliment her:
Most of us tend to make pre-conceived notions about our in-laws and these notions are generally negative. Try not to make judgments before coming to know them for real and for that matter rather than looking at your sister in law with disdain from day one try to compliment her when ever possible. For instance, if you think she has a good sense of dressing, fitness habits, cooking style, etc, compliment her for that. Compliments always work in a positive way.

Get to know her:
This might sound a little hard to do for a lot of you but planning a day out with your sister in-law is a good idea. This will help you to get to know her better and vice versa. An occasional shopping, lunch or a movie will help you bond with one another. Of course it’s foolish to expect that you will always connect but she will definitely appreciate the gesture and your effort to gel in with the family.

Buy her gifts:
Always be generous while giving her gifts, especially on special occasions like her birthday, anniversary etc. Make sure the gift is well thought of and useful. People always appreciate creative gifts and feel that you really do care about them.

Baby sitting:
If your sister in law has kids then you can always offer help to baby sit them for a day, giving her a full day for herself. This might be a tedious job but a great way to score some points.
