How To Know That Your New Born Is Sick

It is very difficult to figure out what is wrong with a new born, because the signs of illness in an infant are very subtle and maybe overlooked at times. But here are some symptoms which can help you in telling if the baby needs professional help.

Lethargy:
Although after sleeping for most of the time, if the baby still appears to be listless or lethargic when awake or if the baby is hard to wake and is not alert, this indicates the presence of some illness.

Breathing:
The pattern of breathing in a new born is fast several times and then rest for ten seconds. However, continuously rapid breathing or if it stops longer than ten seconds, it needs attention.

Jaundice:
It is not a disease but a symptom. The baby looks yellow due to excess amount of bilrubin. It should not be left untreated as it can have fatal consequences.

Hypothermia:
If the body temperature falls below the natural range it leads to hypothermia. New born are not able to regulate their body temperature, especially, if the new born is born at a low birth rate. An early sign of hypothermia is feet that are cold to the touch.

Weight Loss:
New born loose between five to ten percent of their birth weight, but they usually regain it. The weight of the baby has to be monitored closely in initial months as it can provide an insight into the overall health of the baby.

Vomiting:
Spitting up and dribbling milk with burps is common in new born, but if the baby is vomiting large amount of milk after most of the feedings can indicate a problem and you must consult a doctor immediately.

Remember, it’s very important to handle a new born carefully. Any symptom that seems amiss should be told to the doctor. Caution is better than cure.
