How to Prevent Memory Loss
Memory loss is usually the problem of old age. But many people experience short term memory loss even at younger age. You don’t need to worry about it as short term memory loss is normal. But you can do plenty of good things to prevent memory loss. You can follow the tips on how to prevent memory loss given below.
You should be active. Both physical fitness as well as mental fitness plays an important role in keeping you healthy and maintaining good memory. When you are physically active, blood flow to your entire body system, including your brain is increased. Smooth blood flow can help you in keeping your memory sharp.
Exercise also lowers the risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and stroke. All of these health conditions can result in memory loss. You can exercise your brain by solving puzzles, crosswords, etc.
Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Consume plenty of fruits and vegetables as they are packed with antioxidants, which help to keep your brain cells in the best condition. Broccoli and berries are also loaded with antioxidants.
You must also consume low-fat protein sources such as fish, lean meat and skinless poultry. Whole grains, seeds, wheat germ oil, flaxseed oil and nuts are also beneficial for your brain health. Drink adequate water everyday. Include additional B Vitamins, especially Vitamins B6 and B12 in your diet as they help your brain to function properly.
Consumption of excess alcohol can ruin your overall health and weaken your memory. Alcohol can kill your brain cells, which can lead to confusion and memory loss. Hence, limit your alcohol intake and avoid drinking regularly.
Quit smoking. It is not yet known whether smoking affects your memory directly or not but it can lead to several conditions like stroke, hypertension, and other vascular diseases. These diseases are linked to memory loss.
Tired and sleepy mind can lead to poor memory. Hence, make sure that you take sufficient sleep each night. Maintain a regular sleep schedule and sleep for at least 6 to 8 hours per night. You can become forgetful by stress and worries. So it is better if you try to keep both of these factors away from your life.
You must socialize, take precautions while driving to avoid injuries, and should also limit distractions to prevent memory loss.
