Immunotherapy

Immunotherpay is a way of treating allergic reactions and conditions. It is also known as allergen immunotherapy. In this an allergy shot is given. By doing this the body is desensitized to the allergic substances. In this method the allergen that triggers the problems are identified.

The identified allergens are treated with a diluted solution that is made of the allergens. The ratio of allergen to the diluents is 1:5000. This solution or vaccine prepared is administered gradually and the dosage is increased slowly. By doing so the body develops tolerance and immunity towards the allergen. Later after the treatment the effects and symptoms with exposure to allergy is minimal.

Benefits of immunotherapy
Most of the physicians prescribe it in the form of antihistamines; they are meant to treat allergies. These antihistamines block the histamine action and thus provide relief from allergic symptoms, but they cannot prevent the reactions that take place. While immunotherapy, actually makes the body system immune to such allergic reactions. The steady exposure finally desensitizes the immune system of the body.

Limitations-
This kind of treatment is good for persons who are vulnerable to anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis happens due to sting of insects. But immunotherapy may not work for food allergies and other conditions.

Side effects-
In most of the case this kind of treatment can make the reaction of the injection localized. The upper arm of the patient is the most effected. Redness, itchiness and swelling are the common reactions.

Is immunotherapy safe?
Immunotherapy is mostly safe. Studies and trails have proven that they are both safe in adults and children. But In most of the cases the pregnant women should avoid taking such shots. But the older patients should not take such kind of treatment as in their case it is contradictory. It is best if started at a young age and can show amazing results.
