Improve Your Relationship With Your Child
Parenting is the most difficult and challenging job in the whole world. Remember, you don’t get a second chance so instead of trying to perfect your child, try to perfect your relationship with him. Often parents feel that they don’t know their children but by working on it, no matter how difficult the things may seem, you can improve and get closer to your flesh and blood. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Here are some helpful tips:
The most important thing is to love your child unconditionally. Express your love verbally and non-verbally, even if he/she is behaving or not behaving the way you would like them to. It is important to tell the child that your love is unconditional. In case of more than one child the interaction with each has to be different. There is no need to buy expensive gifts to show your love. A word of praise, a pat, a kiss and saying ‘I love you’ will do.
Another very important thing is spending time with your child. Many times you have a lot of things to do so you can involve your child by giving them certain tasks. It will lighten your mood plus you will spend some quality time together. They can help you with daily chores or help you in making dinner. Also make sure, you keep finding new ways to be together. Go for a walk or a picnic, read them at bed time, eat meals together but both you and your child should feel nurtured. It should not be like an obligation always.
Relationships are all about communication. Open and non judgmental communication goes a long way in building a strong relationship. It helps in building trust. Being non-judgmental will help you realize the difficulties and challenges your child is facing. You will be able to understand why they act the way they do and also notice that you are complaining about things you yourself committed at your age. This will help you guide them and warn them of the consequences. Keeping the lines of communication open is very important when the child is in their teens. You need to be there to provide correct information on any subject presented.
Don’t feel frustrated of not being able to address these issues before. Don’t go backward; what you are doing today is what matters. No matter how horrible the things might seem but remember every child wants to be close to there parents and also wants to be in their good books. Any effort made on your part to improve the relationship is going to help and give life time benefits to your child.
