Infectious Diseases
Millions of people die due to infectious diseases worldwide than any other single disease. Therefore it is very important to know what the types of infectious diseases are and what causes such infectious diseases.
Infectious diseases are caused by germs (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa). When you eat, touch or drink anything containing germs you are said to be infected because these germs attack on your body in different ways and cause you serious illness and may even cause death if it is not treated timely. There are two types of infectious diseases: one which is transmitted from animals and the other which is transferred from person to person.
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome i.e. AIDS is a well known disease (also known as HIV infection) which can be kept on the top in the list of infectious diseases because it takes the life of the victim. Even a healthy person can get this dreadful disease through infection. Many Americans have died due to this fatal disease. It is transmitted mainly through blood and unsafe sex.
Another infectious disease is tuberculosis which has affected 16 millions Americans. It is caused due to Mycobacterium. It is transmitted through sputum of the victim. Urinary tract infection is another infectious disease which makes older people its victim. It is transmitted in hospitals.
Infective endocarditis is a major infectious disease which kills many Americans every year due to heart disease. The infection is caused due to the bacteria present in the mouth (gum disease). The harmful bacteria travel through the bloodstream from mouth and reach the heart and get deposited there and are multiplied manifold. It causes heart valve problems and clotting of the blood which results in heart failure. There is also risk of this disease if artificial valve is planted. Bacteria get attached to the valve and travel to the other organs and cause infection. People suffering from this disease are advised to get their mouth cleaned and are prescribed antibiotics.
Adults also suffer from another infectious disease called bone or joint infection. In adults, especially patients who are diabetics, their foot infection causes bone or joint infection because bacteria travels from the wound through the bloodstream and infects the joints.
