Iron Supplements Side Effects

For the normal functioning of our body we all need iron. We all are aware that deficiency of iron results into anemia and includes symptoms like fatigue, irritability, breathlessness, headache, reduced immunity, etc. Deficiency of iron is not very common. We all get sufficient iron from our diet and hence do not require additional iron supplements. Only some people such as pregnant women need extra iron in order to fulfill their need. But still some people try to get extra amount of iron by taking its supplements. Some of the iron supplements side effects are discussed hereunder.

If you take iron supplements in surplus then it may cause you gastrointestinal disorders such as vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, and irregular bowel habits. It may also cause you heartburn and even diarrhea. A common side effect of iron supplement is that of dark colored stool. This is mainly due to less and unabsorbed iron.

If you are taking liquid forms of iron supplements and if it exceeds than is required then it may discolor and stain your teeth. Sometimes you may also observe bluish color appearing on your lips, fingernails and palms of your hand. As a result of iron supplement side effects, you may also be affected by skin disorders like itching, and may develop hives and rashes all over your body. Your skin may start turning pale and get clammy. Sometimes swelling may also develop in your mouth or throat. You must contact your doctor if you see this swelling.

Iron supplements side effects may also include some less common but serious side effects. If you experience pain in your stomach, muscles, back or groin or if you feel numbness in your hands or feet, or experience tingling feelings in your hands then you must contact your doctor as soon as possible. Some other serious side effects of iron supplements are dizziness, flushing, chills or fever, fainting and difficulty in breathing.

Some rare but potentially more hazardous side effects of iron supplements include chest pain, weakness, and double vision, blood in stool, rapid heartbeat and seizures. Contact your doctor immediately on observing any of these symptoms; it might be an indication of iron overdose.

Never take iron supplements at your free will. If you have decided to take iron supplement then consult your doctor first and take his advice.
