Joint Family Problems: Answers to Common Cases

In a joint family, there are a number of problems that different family members face. These problems go unheard and often end up ruining the relationships. Problem 1: I stay in a joint family. There are 22 members at my in-laws. My family comprise of my husband and my son. I am a working woman and have to report to the office at 9 am in the morning. I come back by 6 pm. My in-laws have a problem with this. None of my sister-in-laws are working and they so not want me to work as well. They want me to help them at the household work. I don’t wish to leave my job. I am in a fix. Please help.

Answer: If you wish to continue with your job, then do not think over what others say. But since, you live in a joint family; you must respect everyone’s view. Talk it out with the elders in the family and explain to them that you want to be self-reliant. Tell them, that you will do your bit at home as well. Talk to your husband. If he supports you, you need no other help!

Problem 2: My in-laws family is of 15 people. All of them have different mentality. They expect me to be a different person to each one of them. I cannot adjust with this. I have having difficulty with my husband because of this. He doesn’t understand and thinks that I cannot adapt. Please help.

Answer: You need to talk to the elders of your in-laws family. Be good to everyone. Or be the same to everyone, so to say. Try and explain them, that you cannot be pretentious. You are what you are. Being a different person to everyone will only worsen matter and make your character mysterious. Tell them, that you are being yourself. They are sure to understand.
