Keeping kidneys healthy
The kidneys are one of the most vital organs of the human body and the functions performed by them are both diverse and critically essential. The prime functions of the kidneys include- excretion of metabolic waste materials from the body, fluid regulation within the body, maintenance of the electrolyte balance, hormone secretion and regulation of blood pressure by producing the enzyme renin.
Diseases and disorders relating to the kidneys may either be congenital, such as congenital hydronephrosis and horse shoe kidney, or may be acquired such as kidney stones, renal failure and diabetic nephropathy. Renal failure, commonly addressed as kidney failure is one of the prominent conditions of the kidneys. The condition may develop irrespective of age, and may either occur suddenly, leading to the death of the person in a matter of days, or it may develop slowly (chronic renal failure). Kidney failure disrupts several normal functions of the body manifestly, and is thus relatively easy to detect. These include- anemia, secondary hyperthyroidism, hyper tension, sore and swollen joints etc.
In order to keep his kidneys healthy and functioning properly, one must keep certain things in mind.
Firstly, avoid consuming too much of protein as it tends to exert greater work-pressure on the kidneys. An overtly high protein diet poses a number of health hazards and may cause the glomeruli in the kidneys to breakdown prematurely.
Consuming too much of pain killers can also harm the kidneys adversely. Non steroidal anti inflammatory medications and aspirins are known for damaging the kidneys potentially. The adverse effects are minimal if the kidneys are in good health and the said medicines are taken only when required.
Avoid drinking too much of aerated drinks. Being carbonated they tend to erode the kidneys paving the path for kidney diseases in future. Limit the number of such drinks to 2-3 a day and preferably replace them with other safer beverages like lemonade.
One must also be careful so as not to leave urinary tract infections (uti) unattended or neglected as they may subsequently infect the bladder and the kidneys. When detected early, these infections can be treated easily with the help of antibiotics and by maintaining some routine hygiene practices.
